Culturally Responsive Practice
Educator and professor Gloria Ladson Billings developed the theory of culturally responsive pedagogy. She noticed in her research that when elements of students’ culture and everyday lives were present in their learning environments, they learned better. And when teachers taught with an eye toward their students cultures, they were able to teach better. When they shared their own culture with students, they developed more meaningful relationships.
For ten years, I used culturally responsive pedagogy as a teacher educator to prepare students to work in the schools and libraries of New York City. Many of them have become leaders at the forefront of diversity work and community building.
I use these strategies in professional development available to teachers, librarians, parents, and children. Learning to use culturally responsive habits of thinking helps all people situate themselves in their contexts better, and relate to others more authentically.
